National Dental Accreditation - Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)

The University of Southern Nevada College of Dental Medicine, on October 1, 2007, submitted an Initial Accreditation Application to the Commission on Dental Accreditation for the pending Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics/MBA Residency Program. After a thorough review the Commission on Dental Accreditation, on February 20, 2008, reported the following:

"The Initial Accreditation Application for the developing orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics education program to be offered by the University of Southern Nevada, Henderson, Nevada has been reviewed by a pre-reviewer, Commission on Dental Accreditation-appointed consultant for orthodontics. It appears that this developing orthodontics education program has the potential for meeting the Accreditation Standards for Advanced Specialty Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Accordingly, a 1-day initial accreditation on-site evaluation can now be scheduled.

As you are aware, "initial accreditation" status can only be granted based on an on site evaluation visit. Information gathered from the initial accreditation application and the site evaluation is developed into a report, which is reviewed by the Commission to determine the proposed program’s readiness for the initial accreditation status. Therefore, the Commission requests that the initial accreditation site visit be scheduled for Monday, April 21, 2008. The report of this site visit will be considered at the Commission’s July 2008 meetings."

It is the University of Southern Nevada College of Dental Medicine’s goal and desire to achieve the status of "Initial Accreditation" for the pending Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics/MBA Residency Program prior to matriculation of the residents in the inaugural Class of 2011. According to the Commission on Dental Accreditation, "the receipt of the application indicates that the institution has entered into the accreditation process; however, it does not mean that the program is accredited by the Commission. The decision to grant or deny a developing advanced specialty education program the status of initial accreditation can be made only by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, based on a report written as a result of a pre-enrollment initial accreditation site visit. The earliest that the Commission would grant or deny the program initial accreditation status, provided that the initial application is in order, would be at its July 2008 meeting."
