Raymond Young MBA
Associate Professor of Management

Professor Ray Young earned his MBA (with distinction) from Harvard Business School. He continued his graduate education at Harvard as a Harding Doctoral Fellow, held a faculty appointment as a Harvard Business School research associate, and completed his doctoral course work and met the teaching requirements for a Doctorate in Business Administration. He interrupted his doctoral progress to follow a career in management in the federal government and a second career in business. He returned to his doctoral studies in 2004 to complete a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Professor Young’s teaches courses in the University of Southern Nevada MBA program in statistics for business decision making, production and operations management, and leadership creativity and innovation. His focus is on use of analytical and quantitative methods to support organizations, on the application of information technology, and on design and management of organizations involved in technological innovation.
An electrical engineer by training, he served for several years after graduating from Princeton University as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the 1st Air Cavalry Division on its initial deployment in combat.  He was awarded several medals for valor. Following his initial graduate studies, he joined the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation in Washington, DC, rising to become a federal government executive, as deputy assistant secretary of transportation for policy and international affairs. He played a role in changing the way in which the U.S. regulates its domestic and international transportation industries, moving the system toward less government intervention and more room for competition. He was awarded the highest departmental award, the Secretary of Transportation’s Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement, for his exceptional ability and judgment in the development of the Department of Transportation’s aviation policies.
He followed his federal government service with a second career as a business executive in a global logistics and supply-chain management company, and subsequently as a consultant in those areas.
Professor Young holds a commercial pilot certificate, and his experience includes serving a chief executive officer of a regional airline company. This experience led to a long term research interest in combining management and technology to support high reliability and safety in the design and management of extremely complex transportation systems. Several of the concepts and approaches in his research areas relate to the development of systems to reduce the incidence of injuries and death and provide improved and safer health care services delivery.
Professor Young brings to the MBA classroom a wealth of hands-on experience at the operating and senior executive level. His career theme has been leading and managing people in the global marketplace in both business and government, in an environment characterized by constant organizational and technological change. His academic training, combining business administration and engineering technology management, complements his government and industry experience and brings additional breadth and diversity to the MBA experience at the University of Southern Nevada.
