Dr. Smith received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Colorado and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland. She completed an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson and a specialty residency in pediatrics at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 2002, she received a faculty appointment at USN. She was also a pediatric clinical specialist at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada from 2000 to 2005 where she also precepted pharmacy students and pharmacy practice residents. She is currently the Director of Continuing Education for the College of Pharmacy.

Her research interests include pediatric infectious disease, pulmonary medicine, nutrition support, drug information and clinical pharmacy education. She is an active member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), for which she has been invited to serve on several committees. Other interests include hiking, skiing, and traveling with her family.
