Program Overview
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The University of Southern Nevada offers an 18-month, full-time Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The program of nursing prepares the candidate for entry into practice as a nurse generalist. Completion of the BSN degree allows the graduate to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The graduate must apply to and meet the requirements of appropriate state board of nursing for licensure as a registered nurse, which includes successful completion of the NCLEX-RN.

The mission of the College of Nursing is to provide a quality, innovative undergraduate nursing education designed to meet the diverse health needs of the individuals, families, communities and societies.
Fundamental to this mission is the faculty’s commitment to excellence in education, scholarship, and public service. To support the University of Southern Nevada’s commitment to academic freedom, the College of Nursing endeavors to provide an educational environment that values, respects, and promotes academic freedom for faculty and students.
Purpose
The purpose of the Nursing program is to provide a quality multifaceted nursing education that prepares its graduates to achieve their optimal intellectual and professional development.
The College of Nursing advocates lifelong learning, clinical excellence in various healthcare environments, and provision of competent and caring health services to diverse populations.
In addition, the College of Nursing fosters the core values of excellence, competence, integrity and leadership, which provide the framework for students in their professional practice.

Application
The College of Nursing is accepting applications for the August 2010 class on the Henderson, Nevada campus. The College of Nursing is also accepting applications for the January 2011 class on the Henderson, Nevada and South Jordan, Utah campuses. The deadline to apply to the August 2010 class is June 1, 2010. The deadline to apply to the January 2011 class is November 1, 2010.

- Completed application. Failure to complete the entire application will delay processing.
- Non-refundable application fee of $100 made payable to “University of Southern Nevada” –Applications will not be processed until the application fee is received by the College of Nursing
- Official Transcripts from each University or College attended to be sent to the College of Nursing. Official transcripts must be:
- Sent directly from the institution attended - Transcripts received from or mailed by the student will be considered unofficial.
- Dated within the last year
- Received by the College of Nursing within one (1) month after the application is received to continue processing an application.
- Note: To ensure proper delivery of official transcripts, please indicate the address below when requesting your transcripts.
- Official Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) results must be mailed directly to the College of Nursing from ATI.
- Unofficial Transcripts - It is recommended that unofficial transcripts are submitted with the application; however, official transcripts from all institutions attended must be received before an interview can be scheduled.
- Coursework may be in progress at the time of application, however, a student must submit proper documentation to verify enrollment in courses (transcript or copy of registration/payment of course).
- Additional documentation as stated on the application, if applicable, must be received upon submission of an application. Applications will not be reviewed until applicable documentation is received.

Prerequisite Worksheet
It is highly recommended that the Prerequisite Worksheet be completed prior to submitting an application. The Prerequisite Worksheet is provided as a tool to assist in determining which prerequisites have been fulfilled and those still to be taken to meet the requirements for the Bachelors of Science in Nursing Program. If you have questions regarding whether a course you have taken or are planning to take meets prerequisite requirements, please email Ms. Imelda Revuelto. For a timely response, please include the following in your email:
- Name of the Institution
- Course Title
- Course Name and Number
- Catalog's Course Description
- Semester Credit Hours
- Term that course was taken
Advising Appointments
Prospective applicants must bring in, fax or email a completed prerequisite worksheet (use PDF link above), unofficial/official transcript(s) and course descriptions of coursework in question.Advising appointments can be scheduled by contacting the Admissions and Enrollment Office at 702-968-2075. Advising sessions are for the preliminary review of coursework and to determine equivalent coursework to satisfy prerequisite requirements.
In the event that the prospective applicant is unable to make an appointment to meet with an Advisor in person, coursework information can also be emailed or faxed to 702-968-5279.

Admissions Process and Timeline
Receipt of Application
The College of Nursing Admissions and Enrollment Office will notify an applicant via e-mail upon receipt of an application. Applications will be reviewed in the order received.You will need Acrobat Reader, a free program, installed on your computer to view the pdf files provided here.
Academic Achievement Score
The Admissions and Enrollment Office reviews an applicant’s official transcript(s) to determine his/her academic achievement score. The academic achievement score (maximum 58 points) is determined by evaluating the applicant’s:- Prerequisite coursework,
- Cumulative grade point average, and
- Science grade point average (an additional 2 points will be added for candidate's with a 3.0 or greater GPA).
TEAS Score
The TEAS results will be reviewed to ensure that the minimum required scores have been met. Applicants will be given a score (maximum 28 points can be earned) which will be added to the applicant's academic achievement, interview and writing sample score.Interview Score
If granted, the Admissions and Enrollment Office will contact the applicant via email or telephone to schedule an interview date and time. Therefore, it is essential that the Admissions and Enrollment Office be contacted if there are any changes in contact information.The interview panel consists of three Nursing Faculty members and may consist of a student representative. The student candidate is scored according to the following components (maximum 40 points can be earned):
• Communication (verbal and written)
• Leadership
• Motivation
• Team-Skills
• Problem-Solving Skills
• Professionalism
• Compassion
• Overall ImpressionDuring the interview, the student candidate will be asked to provide a writing sample on a subject or question provided by the Admissions Committee. The student candidate will be scored on grammar, content and format (maximum 8 points can be earned).
Selection Process
After the interview, the academic achievement, TEAS, interview, and writing sample score will be totaled and ranked. The Admissions Committee will consider the score in their final decision.
Applicants with coursework in progress must submit documentation to verify that the applicant is currently registered for or enrolled in the course. Acceptable forms of documentation include an official transcript, unofficial transcript or a copy of the registration for the outstanding course(s). Failure to provide documentation of coursework in progress will delay the application process.
All prerequisites must be completed and documented by an official transcript on or prior to the start of classes unless granted a conditional enrollment. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide the Admissions and Enrollment Office with updated transcripts as courses are completed.
Note: If a student has more than 3 courses in progress, the Admissions and Enrollment Office may request additional documentation prior to granting the applicant an interview.Offer of Admission
Applicants offered admission receive an admission's packet to include:
1. A formal letter from the Dean of the College of Nursing granting admission into the program
2. An admission Form
3. Information from the Financial Aid Office
4. Payment and Registration Agreement Forms
5. Health Insurance InformationAccepting Admission
In order to accept an offer of admission, an applicant should return the following to the University:
1. A completed admission form indicating acceptance to the offer of admission
2. A seating deposit of $250 - Cashier's Check or money order payable to the University of Southern Nevada. The seating deposit is applied to the first year's tuition.
3. If applicable, health insurance information
4. A completed Payment and Registration form indicating the choice in payment options.Students who are offered admission must return all items in the admissions packet to be enrolled in the Nursing program. Failure to turn in all required documents will delay the student’s enrollment into the program.
Upon receipt of all Admission Packet materials, additional information will be sent to the student to include:
1. Orientation information
2. List of required textbooks and materials
3. Clinical requirement information and forms
4. Laptop specifications
5. Roommate database information
6. Academic Calendar
Admission to the College of Nursing is contingent upon the Admissions and Enrollment Office receiving official transcripts documenting successful completion of all prerequisites, and meeting minimum admission requirements on or prior to the first day of classes, unless a conditional enrollment has been granted.
Applicants who decline, are denied or withdraw from an offer of admission, must reapply to be considered for admission in future classes.
Admissions Timeline and Deadlines
August Class: The College of Nursing will begin accepting and reviewing applications in October of the previous year. Interviews will begin in March and will continue until all classes are filled. The deadline to apply to the August class is June 1st.
January Classes: The College of Nursing will begin accepting and reviewing applications in March of the previous year. Interviews will begin in August and will continue until all classes are filled. The deadline to apply to the January classes is November 1st.Financial Aid
Applicants are encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). USN's school code is 040653.
USN offers financial aid to qualifying students in the form of grants, scholarships, and loans. Please note that the mazimum federal aid (Pell Grant and Stafford Loans) will not cover the entire cost of tuition and fees of the program. Students may need to acquire a private loan to be able to finance the remainder of the cost of the program. The Financial Aid office recommends that loan applications be completed at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the program.Please contact the financial aid office at 702-968-1635 or email for additional information on financial aid.
