SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – February 9, 2011 – With a new name announced, and a new College of Dental Medicine opening in the fall, the Utah state legislature recognized Roseman University of Health Sciences during Tuesday’s session for its contributions to higher education in the state. Currently named University of Southern Nevada, the school will officially be renamed Roseman University of Health Sciences effective July 1.

Senator Peter Knudson of Brigham City (one of two dentists in the Utah Senate) presented Roseman University and its founders, University President Dr. Harry Rosenberg and College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Renee Coffman, with a State Legislature Official Citation in the Senate. Rep. Merlynn Newbold of South Jordan announced it to the House of Representatives.

The Citation, which was read on the floor of the Senate and signed by Senate President Michael Waddoups and Speaker of the House Rebecca Lockhart, says, “The state of Utah has long been a leader in promoting innovation in education while encouraging Utah students to pursue higher education. In 2006 Dr. Harry Rosenberg established the University of Southern Nevada’s first campus outside the state of Nevada in the city of South Jordan, opening a college of Pharmacy and a College of Nursing. The first graduating class from the South Jordan campus of the College of Pharmacy enjoyed a 100 percent success rate in passing the National Pharmacy Licensing Exam, an outstanding achievement for both the students and the University.”

It also recognized Roseman University as the fifth largest College of Pharmacy in the U.S. by enrollment, with over 900 total pharmacy students (250 at the Utah campus). The South Jordan campus has 39 additional students in its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN), and will enroll approximately 50 students in Utah’s first and only Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD) in the fall.

The Citation highlighted Roseman University’s accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, a non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the regional authority on educational quality and institutional effectiveness of higher education institutions in the Northwest region that includes Utah.

In addition to bringing higher education opportunities to the state of Utah, Roseman University’s construction of a new building for the College of Dental Medicine in South Jordan’s RiverPark Corporate Center will expand the campus to over 240,000 square feet, and together with equipment and finished improvements will result in an investment of over $40 million in the Utah economy.

According to the Citation, “The Utah legislature hereby recognizes…the Roseman University of Health Sciences on their success in establishing solid educational programs that help provide the state of Utah with medical and dental professionals. We commend you for your commitment to higher education in the fields of dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing, and wish you continued success in the years to come.”

The event was coordinated by South Jordan City representatives, including Council Member Leona Winger (who is a member of the Roseman University Board of Trustees), and Mayor Kent Money. Several South Jordan City Council Members, including Council Member Brian Butters and Council Member Aleta Taylor, attended the signing as well, and city officials came to speak on the importance and economic impact of the University in the state and local area.

University administrators and students joined Dr. Rosenberg and Dr. Coffman at the legislature, including Dr. Larry Fannin, Campus Dean for the South Jordan College of Pharmacy; Dr. Marlene Luna, Campus Dean for the College of Nursing; Dr. Richard Buchanan, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine; and eight pharmacy students.

The University of Southern Nevada’s (USN) South Jordan campus is now enrolling students in its MBA program. Students can earn an MBA in a few as nine months (for daytime programs) or 18 to 22 months (for evening programs two nights per week). And the program is a great option for professionals who live and work in the South Valley area and are looking for a closer MBA option, rather than commuting to the University of Utah or BYU to obtain their degree.

Representatives from the MBA program will be at the South Jordan campus in February and March for information sessions.

What: USN South Jordan MBA Information Sessions
Date: February 3, March 3, and March 17 (Thursdays)

Refreshments will be served, and the event is open to anyone interested in learning more about how an MBA can provide a competitive edge in a difficult job market.

Since 2004 USN has offered an MBA program for students in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program who want to obtain a dual PharmD/MBA degree.

“We have seen a growing demand at the Utah campus for our combined PharmD/MBA degree in the past few years,” said Dr. Okeleke Nzeogwu, USN MBA Program Director. “Now we want to open that MBA program to business professionals who are looking to broaden their career opportunities, develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills, or even start a business.”

USN is a private, non-profit university headquartered in Henderson, Nev. The South Jordan campus opened in 2006 with a College of Pharmacy offering a Doctor of Pharmacy degree; the Utah campus has expanded to include a College of Nursing, offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a dual PharmD/MBA degree. In 2011 it will open the first College of Dental Medicine in Utah, offering a Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD).

Professors teach using an innovative block curriculum, which allows the students to focus on one subject at a time and master each concept before moving on. The result is highly competent graduates in business and health care fields.

USN’s College of Nursing opened in Utah in January to meet the demand for students who are unable to get into nursing school because of long waiting lists and competition for a limited number of available spots in BSN programs, or who missed deadlines for summer and fall programs and don’t want to wait another year to start.

“We see many qualified students who have been unable to get into other programs because of the high demand and small number of available spots in bachelors-level nursing programs in Utah, or who have been accepted and placed on waiting lists that can last two or three years,” said Dr. Marlene Luna, Campus Dean for the USN College of Nursing in South Jordan. “USN provides another option to qualified BSN candidates to get into school sooner, graduate in only 18 months, and begin their nursing career as a baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse right away.”

Cascata’s private gates open to a spectacular landscape that forms a regal backdrop for a golf experience like no other. The par-72 course provides stunning vistas at every turn, including the 3,600-foot peak at Red Mountain, lush fairways, lakes, and streams, one of which cascades down the side of the mountain, meanders through the course and rushes through the center of the club’s 37,000 square-foot Tuscan-style clubhouse.

HENDERSON, Nev. – Sept. 8, 2010 – In conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s first National Take Back Initiative, the city of Henderson Police Department has joined University of Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to present Operation Medicine Cabinet in Henderson.

Unused and expired drugs may be dropped off anonymously and with no-questions-asked for safe disposal during the one-day, drive-through event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 in the north parking lot of the Galleria at Sunset Mall, located at 1300 W. Sunset Road.

Additional Operation Medicine Cabinet drop off locations will include Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Enterprise Area Command at 6975 W. Windmill, North West Area Command at 9850 W. Cheyenne and South East Area Command at 3675 E. Harmon.

“We encourage all residents to look through their medicine cabinets and join us to safely dispose of any old or unneeded prescription medications,” said Henderson Police Chief Jutta Chambers. “I know that this effort has the potential to prevent a tragedy.”

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen also encourages everyone to take advantage of this effort on Sept. 25 to rid their homes of unwanted medications.
"We want to keep these medications from being misused, especially by our young people, and hope all our residents will use this as a chance to come down and help us in this effort," Mayor Hafen said.

According to Paul Oesterman, associate professor of pharmacy practice and faculty advisor of the Drug Abuse Awareness Team at the University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy, the misuse and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, particularly by teens, has increased at an alarming rate in Southern Nevada and across the country.

The National Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control in 2009 showed that one in five U.S. high school students say they have taken a prescription drug such as OxyContin®, Percocet®, Vicodin®, Adderall®, Ritalin®, or Xanax®, without a physician's prescription. Twelfth-graders had the highest likelihood of prescription drug abuse, at 26 percent. A 2009 study by USN, facilitated by Oesterman, found similar rates among Clark County School District middle school students.

“Unfortunately, most people, particularly youth, are either unaware of or not concerned with the potential chemical dangers of these drugs,” said Oesterman. “There are varying strengths, side-effects and interactions to consider when taking medications that aren’t prescribed to you by a doctor or are simply misused. Tragically, the result can be great bodily harm or even death.”

According to Henderson Police Officer Nicole Guess, in addition to regularly cleaning out home medicine cabinets and safely disposing of unwanted drugs and medications, it is also critical that the public secure their current medications at home, so teens can’t access them, as well as keep track of quantities. It’s also important, especially for parents, to make certain that friends and relatives do the same.

Since being introduced in Southern Nevada in February, Operation Medicine Cabinet has conducted two drug collection events yielding more than 380,000 oral doses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs to be destroyed.

Operation Medicine Cabinet is presented by the University of Southern Nevada Drug Abuse Awareness Team, City of Henderson, Henderson Police Department, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Narcotics Education Foundation of Nevada, Clark County Coroner’s Office, Pain in the Drain, Drug Enforcement Administration and 8 News Now. For additional information on Operation Medicine Cabinet and information on securing and properly discarding prescription and over-the-counter drugs, visit www.operationmedicinecabinetlv.org or become a fan on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/operationmedicinecabinetlv.

HENDERSON, Nev. – June 29, 2010– The inaugural class of nine residents enrolled in the University of Southern Nevada College of Dental Medicine’s Advanced Education in Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedics/MBA (AEODO/MBA) residency program achieved a 100 percent pass-rate on the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) written examination.

“Typically, orthodontic residents take this critical exam in their final year of residency, usually after up to three years of orthodontic education. We are extremely proud of our first class of outstanding residents who conquered this exam in their second year, after only 14 months of educational training in the orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedics,” said Dr. Jaleh Pourhamidi, AEODO/MBA residency program director. “This is not only a remarkable achievement for the residents, but also for USN for successfully applying its innovative block curriculum in dental medicine, which has never been done before.”

The AEODO/MBA program is the first post-doctoral residency program launched by the USN College of Dental Medicine, which was established in 2007.  The inaugural class of nine residents was admitted in July 2008 and will complete the three-year program in June 2011. In addition to their orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedics curriculum, under the supervision of orthodontic faculty, residents master their orthodontic skills by providing high-quality, affordable care to children, teens and adults at USN’s high-tech orthodontic clinic.

The residency program is also the first in the United States to require an MBA degree to develop residents’ business and financial competency, all of which are essential in operating a successful practice in today’s complex health care business environment.

The AEODO/MBA program was granted “initial Status” accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) in February 2009.

About the American Board of Orthodontics

The ABO was founded in 1929 as the first specialty board of dentistry. It is the only specialty board for orthodontics that is recognized by the American Dental Association and sponsored by the American Association of Orthodontists.

Successful passage of the written examination allows the orthodontist to present treated cases, which is evaluated by expert examiners of the board during a clinical examination. The passage of the examination process is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist's pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.

HENDERSON, Nev. - Aug. 3, 2010 - Following the overwhelming success of Southern Nevada’s first Operation Medicine Cabinet event in February, University of Southern Nevada’s Drug Abuse Awareness team (USN-DAAT) and a coalition of local organizations have come together for a second event to collect unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs from the public.

Unused and expired drugs may be dropped off anonymously and with no-questions-asked for safe and proper disposal during the one-day, drive-through event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 in the parking lot of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Northwest Area Command, located at 9850 West Cheyenne in Las Vegas.

The first 25 families with children and/or teens will receive a free Rx DrugSAFE™ fingerprint home medicine safe, which provides a secure, convenient solution to safeguard prescription medications. All other participants will receive a coupon for $100 off purchase of a safe.

“The first Operation Medicine Cabinet was tremendous, with more than 120,000 doses of medication collected in just a few hours,” said Dr. Paul Oesterman, associate professor of pharmacy practice and faculty advisor for USN-DAAT. “Since people vulnerable to misuse and abuse, such as children and teens, access prescription and OTC drugs in medicine cabinets at home or while visiting friends and family, securing current drugs and removing and disposing of expired drugs are the easiest ways to help prevent the tragic consequences of drug misuse and abuse.”

According to the 2009 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, one in five U.S. high school students say they have taken a prescription drug such as OxyContin®, Percocet®, Vicodin®, Adderall®, Ritalin®, or Xanax®, without a physician's prescription. Twelfth-graders had the highest likelihood of prescription drug abuse, at 26 percent.

These numbers are similar to data compiled in 2008 by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America that showed that prescription and OTC drugs have emerged as the “party” drugs of choice for many American teens. A 2008 study by the organization showed that one in five teens has tried Vicodin®; one in 10 has tried OxyContin®; one in 10 has used the stimulants Ritalin® or Adderall® for nonmedical purposes and one in 11 teens has admitted to getting high on over-the-counter cough medicine.

New research analysis of the organization’s 2009 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) released in June showed there was a significant 16 percent increase among boys who agreed that "drugs help you relax socially" (from 45 percent in 2008 to 52 percent in 2009) and a 21 percent increase among boys who agreed that "parties are more fun with drugs" (from 34 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in 2009).

Meanwhile, the study showed that teen girls are more likely to associate "self-medicating" benefits of drug use.  More than two-thirds of teen girls responded positively to the question "using drugs helps kids deal with problems at home" (an 11 percent increase, up from 61 percent in 2008 to 68 percent in 2009) and more than half reported that drugs help teens forget their troubles (a 10 percent increase, up from 48 percent in 2008 to 53 percent in 2009).

Oesterman says misusing and abusing these drugs can be extremely dangerous. “Most people, particularly youth, are either unaware of or not concerned with the potential chemical dangers of these drugs,” said Oesterman. “There are varying strengths, side-effects and interactions to consider when taking medications that aren’t prescribed to you by a doctor or are simply misused. Unfortunately, the result can be great bodily harm or even death.”

Lorraine Yarde, principal of RX DrugSafe said, “In addition to regularly cleaning out your medicine cabinet and safely disposing of unwanted drugs and medications, it is also critical that the public lock up their current medications at home, so kids can’t access them, as well as keep track of quantities. It’s also important, especially for parents, to make certain that friends and relatives do the same.”
