Preceptor and Adjunct Clinical Faculty Appointments
The following section outlines the policies and procedures for appointment as a Preceptor or an Adjunct Clinical Faculty in the College of Pharmacy.

Status
Neither Preceptors nor Adjunct Clinical Faculty are employees of the University, nor are they paid by the University. However, Preceptors and Adjunct Clinical Faculty have responsibilities to the College’s experiential program that are stipulated by the contractual affiliation agreement between the experiential training site and the College of Pharmacy. Preceptors and Adjunct Clinical Faculty are not entitled to voting privileges within the College or the University, nor are they eligible for assignment of rank or promotion.

Definitions and Requirements

Preceptor
Preceptors have responsibilities to the College that are limited to participation in experiential programming. Practice sites where preceptors practice are required to maintain an active affiliation agreement with the College. An individual agreement between the College and a practitioner is possible and if developed, would be noted as an addendum to the original site affiliation agreement.

The title of Preceptor will be provided to all pharmacists participating in Pharmacy Practice Experiences (Early, Core, and Advanced). Individuals with this title are eligible for Adjunct Clinical Faculty Appointment if they meet the application requirements described below.

Requirements for Preceptor Appointment

  1. Active site affiliation agreement and/or contractual agreement.
  2. Be a graduate of an accredited college or school of pharmacy.
  3. Possess a minimum of a PharmD degree or a BS Pharm degree with 2 years of experience.
  4. Possess a current license in good standing to practice pharmacy in the state where the experiential experience is to take place.
  5. Be able to devote adequate time for interacting with the students to assure that prescribed outcomes are met.
  6. Attend and complete USN preceptor orientation, at least once every 5 years.
  7. Be knowledgeable of the material contained in the appropriate experiential manual(s).
  8. Consent to serve as a role model for the students.
  9. Have an interest in teaching pharmacy students

Additionally, current membership in a local, state, or national pharmacy organization is highly desirable.

Adjunct Clinical Faculty
Adjunct Clinical Faculty meet all of the requirements for appointment as a preceptor, but also must demonstrate high quality experiential training. Adjunct Clinical Faculty will be evaluated at least every three years to ensure the standard of high quality is met.

Requirements for Adjunct Clinical Faculty Appointment

  1. Has met all requirements for appointment as a preceptor and functioned as a preceptor for the University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy for a minimum of one year.
  2. Demonstrates high quality experiential training as determined by the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs and/or the Experiential Coordinators.

Adjunct Clinical Faculty Status Application Process
Interested candidates must submit the following documents to the Experiential Programs Office:

  1. Letter of interest;
  2. Current resume or curriculum vitae;
  3. Copy of current pharmacist license;
  4. Complete a Site Description Form (provided by USN).

Review of Adjunct Clinical Faculty Applications
All applications will be reviewed by the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs and/or the Experiential Coordinators. Individuals meeting all of the requirements will be contacted accordingly and provided with an appointment letter and certificate. Under certain circumstances, a preceptor or an adjunct faculty member may be exempted from some of the above criteria with the approval of the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs and/or the Experiential Coordinators.

Reappointment Process for Adjunct Faculty Appointment
Adjunct Clinical Faculty reappointments after the first year will be approved for and re-evaluated every 3 years by the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs and/or the Experiential Coordinators. Each adjunct faculty will be asked to submit updated curriculum vitae and attend a University of Southern Nevada’s sponsored preceptor development program every 3 years. The USN experiential program will track the number of students that each Adjunct Clinical Faculty member has precepted over the past 3 years and maintain a summary of evaluations which will be reviewed for reappointment. If reappointment as Adjunct Clinical Faculty is granted, then an updated appointment letter will be provided.

Adjunct Clinical Faculty Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of each Adjunct Clinical Faculty to maintain the appointment requirements. Adjunct Clinical Faculty may be asked to volunteer for other College activities such as assisting with prospective student interviews and experiential focus groups.

Benefits of Adjunct Faculty Appointment
Since Adjunct Clinical Faculty are not University employees, all benefits and other rights and privileges are as per primary employer. Appointment as Adjunct Clinical Faculty is indicative of special recognition from the College highlighting dedication and commitment to institutional mission, values and goals. Those afforded appointments will have letters sent to supervisors recognizing this accomplishment.

Other benefits associated with Adjunct Clinical Faculty appointment include:

  • Invitations to and recognition during special events held by the College
  • Recognition during accreditation visits
  • Reduced fees for selected continuing education events held on campus or sponsored by the College
  • Access to selected educational resources available through the Library Learning Resource Center

Termination of Preceptor & Adjunct Clinical Faculty Appointment
Individuals may resign Adjunct Clinical Faculty appointments by providing written notification to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs or the Experiential Coordinators. All benefits and other privileges will be terminated accordingly.

The Dean and/or the Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs reserves the right to terminate Adjunct Clinical Faculty appointments for any of the following reasons:

  1. Relocation to a new practice site that does not have an affiliation agreement with the College;
  2. Documented unprofessional or illegal activities; or,
  3. Consistent, negative evaluations from students with no demonstrable improvement after completing the College’s preceptor development program.
