Arup Chakraborty BS, MS, PhD
Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Chakraborty received his Master of Science degree in biological sciences (1991) and PhD degree in chemistry (1994) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His MS and PhD thesis was based on protein synthesis regulation by biochemical properties of proteins like glycosylation and phosphorylation. His post-doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was focused on the role of cytokines (i.e. G-CSF, IL-6 and IL-3 etc.) in normal and abnormal (leukemic) blood cells. He received two fellowship grants from NIH and Lauri-Strauss leukemia foundation during that time. Then he joined as an assistant professor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Tx. He worked on the role of immune cells during inflammation and aberrant existence of cytokine and cytokine receptors in bladder and pancreatic cancer. He established the hypothesis that cytokine G-CSF and its receptor can serve as an early biological marker for poor prognosis of cancer. He received institutional research setup fund from Baylor College of Medicine, NIH R21 research grant and USDA research grant during this time. Then he joined University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Tx, as an assistant professor of Experimental Therapeutics to pursue his interest in developing small molecule inhibitors of major cytokine signaling pathways in cancer and immune cell migration. He also worked for short time in a biotech company as a project manager just before joining the University of Southern Nevada. He published more than 25 scientific articles in various international journals and taught biochemistry, chemistry and biology to undergraduate and graduate students.
