The event will begin with registration and a continental breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and the scramble commences with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon and raffle will be held following the tournament. To further benefit the university and its programs, several sponsorship opportunities are available.

“Our annual scholarship golf tournament continues to raise funds to support scholarships for our exceptional pharmacy, nursing and MBA students,” said USN Founder and President Dr. Harry Rosenberg. “This year’s tournament provides a great opportunity for local professionals to play the exclusive Cascata Golf Club while supporting our students at the same time.”

Designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, Cascata Golf Club opened in 2000 and is already celebrated as one of the finest designs in the world, offering the ultimate in privacy, luxury and uncompromising service. Cascata, Italian for “waterfall,” is aptly named. A 418-foot waterfall flows from the steep mountainside, tumbling over mammoth boulders, cascading into a river that roars through the clubhouse, eventually culminating in a tranquil stream. Sports Illustrated has named Cascata Golf Club "golf’s hidden treasure."

Single golfer and golf foursomes are available. Participants in the golf tournament will receive a gift valued at $200. Each foursome will be guided through eight miles of spectacular fairway by a caddy.

Chairing the USN Scholarship Golf Tournament is Herb Hunter, general sales manager for EMBARQ.

Nursing Student Awarded Siemens Oncology Scholarship

Doris Akuette, BSN Class of 2009, has been awarded the Siemens Oncology Scholarship from the Nevada Cancer Institute and Siemens Foundation.

The scholarship program aims to increase the number of Nevada students focusing on oncology nursing, basic sciences, biotechnology or public health. The scholarship program also allows currently licensed registered nurses (RN) to complete graduate work focusing on oncology nursing.

Over the past eight years, Akuette has worked as a patient care assistant in various hospitals in many areas, but oncology is the field that appeals to her most strongly. After graduating from USN's College of Nursing,  she hopes to work in an oncology specialist hospital and earn a master’s degree in oncology nursing, with an emphasis in research. Doris sees teaching patients to take charge of their lives and illness is as key way to make a substantial impact in oncology.

The Oncology Nursing Scholarships are awarded to students who show academic excellence and an interest in this field.

“The scholarship winners demonstrate an intense passion for knowledge and ambition toward the fight against cancer,” said Sandra Murdock, NVCI president and chief executive officer. “We could not be happier with the quality of these recipients, and their drive to excel in the nursing and sciences professions.”

It is the hope of NVCI and Siemens that through the scholarship program, talent in the healthcare industry can be nurtured at home, enhancing Nevada’s health care industry.
